NDSM

NDSM in Amsterdam is a repurposed shipyard known for its creative arts scene, featuring colourful street art, cultural events, and unique spaces for artists. It has become a hub for festivals, exhibitions, and innovative businesses, offering a blend of industrial charm and urban culture. But perhaps it’s the most famous for it’s flea market, one of the biggest in Europe.

As an enthusiast photographer I’m always on the lookout for unique landscapes, and NDSM had been on my wish list every since I purchased Captain Click. The vibrant former shipyard promises endless colour and inspiration, with the flea market adding an additional layer of random cool moments to capture.

The moment I stepped off the ferry, which is the most common way to arrive there from Central Station or Houthavens, I was greeted with stunning modern architecture on the left side, and the old warehouses covered in murals on the right, creating a very unique contrast and play of colours. The massive warehouses with their rough and weathered interiors and exteriors, create an very attractive backdrop for the style of photography that I enjoy.

The flea market, called iJ-Hallen offers a wide range of bargains, and an eclectic mix of stalls. From retro vinyls, to clothing, jewellery, home decorations and old cameras, I would be comfortable calling it a bargain hunter’s paradise. For a photographer, it’s a generator of endless amount of unique shots.
